Ride History
The Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation was founded in 2008 to raise funds in support of research for a cure for Hypodiploid Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia or “HALL”, a subtype of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, the most common form of pediatric cancer, and to fight secondary infections which immune compromised patients are susceptible to, including Zygomycosis, the infection that ultimately claimed Henry’s life.

In 2010, the Chicago Fire Department’s Ignite the Spirit Fund, which supports CFD families in need, reached out to the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation offering support in the form of a fundraising bike ride. Three bike rides later, Ignite and 41 & 9 have raised over $150,000 that has been used for medical research and support at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and for the worldwide publication of a scientific supplement on Zygomycosis.

Hanks Story
Hank Schueler was an active eighth grader with amazing dreams and a bright future ahead of him. As a student at St. Mary of the Woods Elementary School in the Edgebrook neighborhood on Chicago’s northwest side, Hank was a great son and brother, blessed with exceptional academic skills and a great smile. Hank was also a standout, two-sport athlete, playing football and baseball. He loved every minute of his life and was looking forward to the fall of 2007 when he would start classes at St. Patrick’s High School.

Hank’s hopes and dreams were put on hold in November 2006 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia the most common form of pediatric cancer called Hypodiploid Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia or “HALL”. This disease brought out the fighter in Hank as he endured a bone marrow transplant and many rounds of chemotherapy, along with a secondary infection, Zygomycosis, which eventually took his life on December 14, 2007. Even in death, Hank has never stopped fighting through others, to help others.
