Day One Ride
The first day was a great adventure. Riders, friends and family assembled at Wrigley field in front of Engine 78. Followed by group pictures on the the warning track in the stadium outfield. When it was time to go we received a fire engine escort to the lakefront.
We had fifty riders the first day. 17 Boston and 35 One day riders. We started off riding together down the bike path. On Memorial Day the path was a little congested. But as we rode further south through Chicago more room opened up. Once we hit the open roads we split up a bit separated by pace.
Our first stop was in Calumet Park on 95th street, 20 miles in. The second stop was in Gary 40 miles in at the Steel Yards Baseball stadium. Incredibly great stop inside the park. I'm amazed at all the excellent organization they did to get these places for rest areas.
The next stretch of rode from Gary to Pines was pretty hot. Felt like 90 or so. After that we entered the Dunes Lakeshore, temps cooled with much needed relieve. Another stop in Pines at mile 60. As we entered our destination of New Buffalo Michigan we met up with local police for an escort into town. The ride ended at Casey's Bar and Grill for a pasta, and veggi buffet as well as open bar. What I nice day it was. This treatment is over the top.
